Description/notes

"In the heart of Tanzania, where the landscapes are as diverse as the communities that inhabit them, the need for a grassroots approach to sustainable development became increasingly apparent. It was in this context that Gundua Uwezo Saidia Amsha (GUSA) was born—a beacon of hope for communities striving to uncover their potential and embrace a brighter future.

Founded with a mission to empower, GUSA’s journey began with a simple yet profound belief: that within every community lies untapped potential waiting to be discovered. This belief has driven GUSA to create programs and initiatives that not only address immediate needs but also build a foundation for long-term, sustainable development.

Over the years, GUSA has grown from a small initiative into a respected institution, known for its innovative approach to tackling some of the most pressing challenges faced by communities across Tanzania. From climate change action to economic empowerment, GUSA has been at the forefront of driving change, guided by its core values and unwavering commitment to inclusivity, integrity, and collaboration.

Our key focus areas include:

1. Sustainable Waste Management: We promote composting and other innovative technologies, such as black soldier fly farming and cage composting, to improve waste management practices. These approaches align with government waste management policies and support behavior change campaigns.

2. Climate Change Action: We lead capacity-building programs and behavior change campaigns that encourage communities to adopt climate-friendly practices in agriculture, energy, and waste management. This includes sustainable agriculture initiatives and support for climate-sensitive startups.

3. Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment: GUSA provides training in entrepreneurship, business management, and good agricultural practices. We focus particularly on women-led and youth groups, helping them improve their livelihoods through market access and sustainable practices.

4. Gender Inclusion and Social Justice: We actively promote gender equality and address social challenges such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV). GUSA supports the formation of women-led groups, providing capacity-building in leadership, group dynamics, and business skills.

5. Agriculture and Nutrition: GUSA works with farmers and individuals involved in vegetable production and gardening, offering training on good agricultural practices, nutrition, and market linkages.

Currently, GUSA is involved in a number of projects, including capacity-building programs in waste management in partnership with the Dar es Salaam City Council, composting projects, and community-led initiatives in sustainable agriculture. We're also working on initiatives in climate action and market access for traditional artisans.
