Description/notes

"Our mission is to enhance the health and wellbeing of Alabamians by reducing air pollution, advancing environmental justice, and promoting climate solutions through education, advocacy, and collaboration.

Historically, Birmingham has one of the worst levels of air quality in the country. According to the 2022 State of the Air Report, Birmingham still has one of the worst levels of air quality in the Southeast. Since it was established in 2010, GASP has been holding air polluters accountable for their emissions. In 2020, it worked with Southern Environmental Law Center to secure a $925,000 penalty—one of the biggest in JCDH history—against Bluestone Coke, located in the north side of Birmingham- for endangering citizens with naphthalene and benzene.

GASP works to ensure that everyone in Alabama breathes clean air by: Upholding the law to strengthen air quality regulations, comment on permits for air pollution sources, and enforcement through litigation Using grassroots engagement efforts to educate the public on the risks of air pollution. Providing communities with tools to understand air quality, so that they may use their voices for regulatory enforcement and policy change. Collaborating with air quality and environmental scientists, organizations, businesses, public health professionals, climate & energy justice advocates, and other groups to ensure environmental justice.

GASP’s theory of change combines these areas of work in order to achieve its goals through this integrated approach.
